Root Canals
Understanding the Procedure
What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a dental procedure designed to treat an infected or damaged tooth. It involves removing the infected pulp from the inside of the tooth, which contains nerves and blood vessels, and sealing the space to prevent further infection. This treatment allows you to keep your natural tooth and avoid more extensive dental work.
Why Might You Need a Root Canal?
- Deep decay from cavities
- Fractured or cracked teeth
- Large fillings that are too close to the pulp
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
- Severe toothache
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
- Swelling and tenderness in the gums
- Discoloration of the tooth
The Root Canal Procedure
- Numbing: Local anesthesia is administered by our team to ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure.
- Accessing the Tooth: A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber.
- Cleaning the Pulp: The infected pulp and tissue are carefully removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and shaped.
- Filling: The empty pulp chamber and root canals are filled with gutta percha, a rubber-like material that seals the space.
- Restoration: After sealing, the tooth may be restored with a crown or filling to protect it and restore its function.
Post-Treatment Care
Alternatives to Root Canal Treatment
- Tooth Extraction: Removing the tooth and leaving a gap, which can lead to complications.
- Replacement Options: If extraction occurs, options such as dental implants, bridges, or dentures can be discussed.
Root Canal Procedure with Our Team
When you come in for a root canal, our team prioritizes your comfort and ensures a smooth experience. Here’s what to expect during your treatment:
Initial Visit
- Anesthesia: Our team will begin by applying a topical anesthetic to your gums before injecting local anesthesia to numb the area where he will be working.
- Accessing the Tooth: Once you’re numb, Our team will use a dental handpiece (drill) with the appropriate bur size to remove part of the occlusal surface of the tooth crown (the biting surface) and access the pulp chamber.
- Removing Infected Tissue: He will then carefully remove the infected pulp and the nerves from each canal. At this stage, he typically places a small cotton ball with a disinfecting medication and a temporary filling. Before you leave, Our team will schedule a follow-up appointment to complete the root canal therapy, usually within ten days to two weeks.
Follow-Up Appointment
- Anesthesia: Our team will again anesthetize the area around the tooth receiving root canal therapy and remove the temporary filling material.
- Cleaning the Tooth: He will clean the pulp chamber and each canal thoroughly. Using an endodontic file, Our team will measure the length of each canal and place permanent filling material into them. A temporary filling will then be applied to close the tooth until your next visit.
- Final Restoration: At your follow-up appointment, Our team will either fill the tooth or prepare it for a crown, depending on what’s necessary.
