Dental Crowns
Restore Your Smile
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that encases the entire visible portion of a damaged or weakened tooth. Crowns are designed to restore strength, functionality, and aesthetics, making them an ideal solution for various dental issues.
When Are Dental Crowns Needed?
Dental crowns may be recommended for:
- Supporting a Weak Tooth: If a tooth has significant decay or damage, a crown can provide the necessary support.
- After Root Canal Treatment: Crowns protect and strengthen teeth that have undergone root canal therapy.
- Improving Aesthetics: Crowns can enhance the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth.
- Anchoring Dental Bridges: Crowns are often used to hold bridges in place, filling gaps caused by missing teeth.
- Preventing Overfilling: In cases where a tooth has extensive decay, using a crown instead of multiple composite fillings can help avoid overfilling, which can weaken the tooth and lead to further complications.
Crowns can be made from various materials, including:
- Porcelain: Offers a natural look and is ideal for front teeth.
- Zirconia: A popular choice for its strength, durability, and natural appearance. Zirconia crowns are resistant to wear and can be used for both anterior and posterior teeth. They are also biocompatible, making them a safe option for many patients.
- Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal: Combines strength and aesthetics, making it suitable for both front and back teeth.
- Gold or Other Metals: Highly durable and ideal for molars, though less aesthetically pleasing.
The Dental Crown Procedure
- Initial Consultation: Dr. Carlson or Dr. Gabriel will evaluate your tooth and discuss your treatment options.
- Preparation: After numbing the area, the tooth is reshaped to allow for a proper fit of the crown.
- Impression: An impression is taken to create a custom crown tailored to your tooth.
- Temporary Crown: A temporary crown will be placed to protect your tooth while your permanent crown is being made.
- Final Placement: Once your custom crown is ready, you’ll return for the final placement. Dr. Carlson or Dr. Gabriel will ensure a perfect fit and secure the crown using permanent dental cement. The final crown is usually delivered 2 weeks after impressions are taken.
Care and Maintenance
With proper care, dental crowns can last many years. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, to keep your crown and surrounding teeth healthy.
