Dental Fillings
Restoring Tooth Health
Dental fillings are a common restorative procedure used to treat cavities and restore the function and integrity of a tooth. When decay is present, the affected portion of the tooth is removed, and the cavity is filled with a durable material. Fillings help prevent further decay and maintain a healthy smile.
When Are Dental Fillings Needed?
Dental fillings may be recommended for:
- Treating Cavities: Fillings are essential for addressing tooth decay, preventing the cavity from worsening and leading to more serious dental issues.
- Restoring Tooth Structure: Fillings help restore the shape and function of a tooth that has been damaged by decay or trauma.
- Enhancing Aesthetics: Composite fillings can improve the appearance of teeth by matching the natural color and texture of your teeth.
- Preventing Pain and Sensitivity: By sealing off areas affected by decay, fillings can alleviate discomfort and sensitivity associated with cavities.
Types of Dental Filling Materials
- Composite Resin: This tooth-colored material is ideal for front teeth and areas requiring aesthetics. Composite fillings can be matched to the shade of your natural teeth and are highly durable.
- Amalgam: Made from a mixture of metals, amalgam fillings are silver or gray and are known for their strength. They are often used for back teeth due to their durability, although they are less aesthetically pleasing.
- Ceramic:These fillings are made of porcelain and offer a natural appearance similar to composite resin, providing durability and aesthetics for both front and back teeth.
- Glass Ionomer: This type of filling is made from a mixture of acrylic and glass. It releases fluoride, which can help protect the tooth from further decay, making it suitable for children and in areas not subjected to heavy chewing pressure.
The Dental Filling Procedure
1
Initial Consultation
Our dental team will evaluate your tooth and determine the extent of decay, discussing your treatment options, including the type of filling best suited for your needs.
2
Anesthesia
To ensure your comfort, a topical anesthetic is applied, followed by a local anesthetic to numb the area around the affected tooth.
3
Decay Removal
Once numb, a dental handpiece (drill) is used to carefully remove the decayed portion of the tooth, preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible.
4
Preparation for Filling
After removing the decay, the area is thoroughly cleaned and dried. A bonding agent is applied if using composite material, followed by curing with an LED light.
5
Filling Placement
The chosen filling material is placed into the cavity, often in layers for composite fillings. Each layer is cured to ensure strength and durability.
6
Finishing Touches
Once the filling is placed and hardened, the surface is smoothed and polished to restore the tooth’s natural shape and function.
Care and Maintenance
With proper care, dental fillings can last many years. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene—regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups—to keep your fillings and surrounding teeth healthy.
